International
by Lucien Crandall
Patented 1889
This International typewriter was patented by typewriter pioneer
Lucien Crandall in 1889. Nickel plated and featuring a decorative
cloud cutout design on its sides and rear, the International had a look
that could have been fit for royalty. A massive writing instrument
that included a double keyboard, understrike typing and a ribbon that traveled
both horizontally as well as vertically, the International and its cousin,
the Crandall, were said to have led to the invention of more swear-words
than all other typewriters combined. Needless to say, the International
was a failure in the marketplace and few were made.
