Smith Premier

Model 2 of 1896
Manufactured by the L.C. Smith Gun Company of Syracuse, New York. The Smith Premier first appeared on the typewriter scene in 1890. The Smith Premier is a double keyboard, understrike typewriter with several advanced features for its day. Unique in that its key levers rotated, rather than travel downward, the Smith Premier provided a light touch and superior typebar action. Additionally, a turn of the platen knob could rotate the platen upwards to reveal the work being performed and a novel brush mounted inside was used to clean the type. A handle (see photo) was provided to insert into the machine to perform this task.
